Microelectronics | Parallel PIC Programmer

Synopsis

While searching for a parallel port PIC microcontroller programmer, I've stumbled upon Vladimir Soso's schematic. The author proposes an ICSP programmer that is described on the Oshon Software Internet site. This schematic works best with the software available on the same site.

Schematic Diagram

First, let's inspect the schematic diagram. There are only two transistors and one hex inverter. The power supply is built around a pair of chained linear voltage regulators that convert the input voltage to 12 V and subsequently 5 V.

For more details, refer to the official documentation.

Construction and Pictures

I've built the PCB myself, using a classic DIY method of drawing the tracks with a permanent marker. Then I've etched the copper with nitric acid (HNO3) and washed the permanent marker with isopropyl alcohol.

This is the completed printed circuit board assembly. All parts except the DB25 male connector are recovered and repurposed.

Even the non-standard LEDs are recovered. These are neither 3 mm nor 5 mm parts, and have a deep RED light emission, contrary to the orange-reddish resin color.

Thank you for reading this page, and I hope you found it useful.
